Before we moved in, I ordered Leo the Harbour Cane Bed from Serena & Lily – it arrived fairly quickly (3 weeks about?) and it came in impeccable condition. I was so relieved, because Leo was really wanting a bed to make him feel more at home in his new little bedroom!
This blog post is sponsored by Serena & Lily; everything linked here is currently part of their 20% off site wide sale that ends tomorrow!
His room isn’t complete, but this bed marks a major design update. To fully appreciate the space as it’s coming along let’s take a peek at the before:
And today, with Leo’s room at about 60% completion (that’s the most “done” room in our house!):
Harbour Cane Bed in Black
This is a sturdy bed that is kid friendly, with a solid hardwood frame. Like most of Serena & Lily furniture, it is heavy and substantial. Certainly well built. But most important to me is beauty… and it checks all those boxes.
The fluted legs are lovely, as are the simple molding details. I put the mattress on a 5″ foundation frame to lift it up, but I think you could go either way.
Although we chose a black bed for Leo, I still want the overall feel in this room to be light and bright. You can still achieve that with black furniture! If anything, the black bed makes the room more interesting.
The bed offers double-sided caning on both the headboard and footboard, woven of sustainable rattan in a medium color; not too saturated and not too light.
Initially I had Serena & Lily’s Round Hill Lamp right here on his nightstand, as it’s such a perfect trio with the woven tabletop and the bed! After some inner debate I moved it to the top of a dresser to be safer. A wise move, obviously. If you have a guest bed I think this would be a lovely choice.
I already had the Carson Side Table that is working beautifully as his nightstand and will stay here! I wasn’t planning on putting the two together at first. I noticed the table has dyed black woven strips on top, making it a lucky match for the Harbour Cane bed.
Leo’s gingham bedding works great with the bed; it is easy care so any dirt (or a hidden snack) Leo brings into the bed washes right out.
This fun light is on it’s way and I think will add some fun texture to the room!
We are still wanting on the arrival of the light, drapes, wallpaper and a rug, so I’ll be updating the blog once the room is complete.

The Harbour cane bed is a big step for this room – it is casual yet sophisticated, which is always my design goal. Since the bed is Leo’s first big new piece in the room, it solidified that my design decisions are heading in the right direction in here!
