Today I’m talking about how to mix your summery decor with seasonal… meaning fall right through the holidays! I am including holiday pillow combinations for summer lovers, some favorite pillows all under $30, and additional fall decorating ideas!
Our sofa is a large gray sectional. All summer she’s been rocking summery grey and blue pillows – but now she looks too cool toned for the cozy months of fall and winter.
Last week I was chatting on the phone with my talented friend Molly (of Molly Basile Interiors out of Charleston), about what “color story” to use this fall. I want my fall colors to work year round, and work with what I already have, but also be new and fresh!
I love my summery coastal style (no deep reds or burgundys for me) but I still want my living room to have the coziness and warmth of fall. Mixing green into my blue decor is a way to bring summer decor right into fall, and then right into the holidays.
Molly suggested bringing in a lot of deeper greens combined with a little tan or natural on the other fall pillow covers. Green allows us blue and white lovers to keep using the pretty blues we own, but also bring in the deeper colors of the season. It’s the perfect color for fall!
Fall Pillow Combinations That Work Together:
How stunning are those green and navy Schumacher pillows? They look great next to blue pillows.
Fall pillow covers don’t have to be dark reds and browns, if that’s not your thing. These Schumacher pillows translate perfectly for the Christmas season, and I’ll be using them again in the spring.

Pieces Already In The Room:
Ginger jars from Amazon can go right into fall and winter by popping darker magnolia leaves (on clearance) inside. I’m thinking I’ll lined these on my mantel.

Our living room has always been filled with blues and shiplap – making our house feel beachy and summery all the time. I love that and I am not trying to take too much away from my decor.
Swapping out a few of the pillows and adding just a few darker textiles will feel more our home feel more cozy.
Emerald green pillows go SO well with all types of blue! If you are a big blue and white fan, add a pop of green to your decor, and a warm toned natural pillow and you are all set this fall!
I came across a lot of really nice quality pillows I considered. Here are some of my favorite pillows you will love.

I especially heart that round navy pillow, from Target! That’s a good one.
I also noticed a lot of sales on fall pillow covers. I was surprised that Pottery Barn included a lot of their popular fall pillows in their sales.

How Many Pillows Total?
As far as how many pillows you want on your sofa, for a large sectional like mine, Molly told me that 8 is plenty! This makes for 3 on the ends and 2 more in the middle with a throw blanket.
For a regular sized sofa, I like 4 to 6 throw pillows. You could do 3 on each end, or 2 on each end and a lumbar in the center, or 2 large pillows on each end.
I prefer to buy pillows in pairs for symmetry, although it’s not necessary. It helps it look more put together!
