We have a set of tall builtins in this little nook in our hall. They sit at the top of the stairs, and across from another set of stairs leading up to our playroom. Guests can catch a glimpse of the shelves if they look up from our entry, and I can even see them laying down from my bedroom.
When we moved into the house last winter, I unpacked a box of books and frames, stuck them all on the shelves and left it for another day. Someone on instagram commented recently that greenery would help, and it totally inspired me to revamp the bookcases!
Everybody loves a good before + after! I dug through my phone and found an old one!
Nothing too terrible, but not that easy on the eyes.
Ok, I just want to put this out there, these are in no way perfect. Now that I am looking at this picture so many things are off. My kids mess with the bottom 3 shelves daily and I am obviously ok with that. The kids' books could look so cute in little vertical piles, but my children actually USE these books on a daily basis. They are forever sitting in the hall, reading 3 or 4 and then walking away leaving 25 books all spread out for Mama to find. ☺️ They each have a basket and the little ones especially love to put toys in and out of them.
I added a lot of negative space. Less is more, right? I collected our adult books into smaller groups, and added a few more items of interest, faux greenery and new baskets.
I stay away from small items. They start to look like clutter. Better to have a large item of interest on a shelf, then a bunch of knick knacks.
I am so much happier every time I walk by these shelves!
