Drop zones or mudrooms can be simple or elaborate- but they all have two must haves: hooks and a bench. Our previous home was built in the 1970s and we had 1 dark, cramped closet that served as a drop zone for the 6 of us. Because of that I made sure to put a window in this room! I kept the design fairly simple though; my priority was on creating as much space as possible. I did give each child a few cubbies and put in a small mail zone for us by the garage door!
This room changes with the season... my favorite is seeing my family's bathing suits, damp towels and tennis rackets thrown on these hooks all summer. It's just a happy little scene!
It was time to pack all that away because my kids needed room for all their school things. You may have seen on instagram that I gave this room an overhaul, and I'm hoping it will work harder for us this year. Last year we always were tripping over things they left on the floor, and I was forever finding dirty socks down here. 😒 Hoping this helps!
One would think a cubby would make it easy for kids to keep their shoes inside! Oh no. There was no organization to the cubbies either. I found these navy metal bins at Target. So far thy are helping keep all the shoes separated and off the floor
Those striped overhead baskets at the top are perfect for the kids personal items. We stick their lunch boxes in there over the weekend, so they don't live on the counter and become clutter. Their headphones, sunglasses and sunscreen, any items they may need for school, or their smaller items that need corralling are all within reach.
I added a little hamper for their dirty socks. I can't tell you how many times I've nagged the kids to pick up their dirty socks and bring them upstairs to the laundry. And they continue to leave them here, because that's what kids do. Hopefully this mini laundry basket solves that problem.
3. Paper / Clutter Organizer
We use our mail zone for the kids papers and just one slot for mail. With 4 kids in school, the paper coming home is ENDLESS. This system works well for us! If we didn't have it, Anthropologie sells this cute little paper divider that is pretty enough to leave out! My husband and I drop our keys and sunglasses in that bowl as we walk in the door.
4. Hair Ties
I keep some of Sofia's hair ties + bows down here in a glass jar because she is always looking for one at the last possible minute on the way out the door. She likes to keep one on her wrist during the day at school, and I like to stick a bow in her hair at the last minute because I'm a mom who can't help herself.
5. Granada Laptop Backpack
The Baggallini Granada Backpack was kindly gifted to me to try out, and it has become a lifesaver for my blog life! With school in full swing I spend a ton of time just waiting for my kids' activities to end. And with Robbie's year round swimming, I spend FOUR evenings a week just sitting at the side of the pool. I started using their Granada Backpack this year to bring my laptop, camera, usb plug, headphones, notebook and multiple cords with me so I can set up shop and get some blog work done. Total game changer! I keep all my items in it ready to go, so I grab the bag off the hook on our way out the door and I don't have to worry about forgetting anything.
I was more than happy to review it for them once I started using it, and I highly recommend this if you are a working woman! My favorite part is that they offer RFID protection (RFID is electronic pickpocketing, when people steal your cc numbers by just skimming them from a few feet away). Ever since this happened to a friend of mine I will only use wallets and bags that are RFID protected. This particular bag has 2 large padded pockets to keep my computer equipment protected, and the straps are heavily padded so it's comfortable.
6. Closed Off Storage
We have two closets in here for the purpose of hanging our own adult coats and shoes out of sight. If you can swing it, put some kind of closed off storage in your drop zone. Some things need to be shoved out of sight so you don't have to care about everything looking neat!
