Y’all, its 2018 and I’m just going to put this out there about myself: cooking dinner is really annoying. I hate planning it, all the chopping is annoying, I’m constantly leaving out ingredients, I don’t like to be precise (in everything in life) so its always too much of this or that.
I make sure and burn a dinner every now and then. Just so nobody gets the wrong idea and expects too much from me. Luckily, Jose is super passionate about cooking and a total foodie, so it works out for us most of the time! 😌
This summer I got it into my head that a good mom would be teaching her kids some basic cooking skills so they won’t turn out like me. Also for other reasons, like maybe they’ll learn something and it’s just good for them to be involved. Almost as soon as this thought came through my head, I blurted out to Robbie + Sofia that through the month of July, they will be picking out a meal once a week and cooking dinner for the family.
They were PUMPED. Both of them wanted to cook THAT night and they had so many ideas. Ohhhh, the ideas.
Although I was encouraging them to branch out, Robbie ended up picking the old family favorite “Bacon Salad”. Our family loves this salad and the kids actually request it a lot! The dressing is light, and it has enough avocado and bacon to keep the kids from complaining about eating salad!
The funny thing is how into it he was! He was serious and focused the whole time. And he was pretty proud of himself. Of course we all had to wolf it down practically standing because the older kids were late for a swim meet.
And on that note, I will say plan for extra time because he was pretty slow putting this together. I’m so used to making this salad I can make it in my sleep, but he needed time.
I have about half my friends making this salad now because its just that good. Go ahead and pin it!
Sofia’s hilarious choice was “grilled salmon and broccoli”…. okay, WHO ARE YOU?? Me on January 1st?
Actually, I convinced her to make Tilapia because we already had it in the freezer. This is my favorite bag we buy from Costco.
If you have trouble cooking or feeding your family fish because its just weird and a hassle, I HAVE BEEN IN YOUR SHOES! Its okay!! But you need this bag. This right here makes it super easy and takes away the gross factor. It comes with portions of tilapia all individually wrapped up and clean looking. We literally just take out what we need, sprinkle cajun seasoning on top and toss in the saute pan- 4 minutes each side. Everyone can handle that!
Take aways from this first week:
I still hate cooking dinner.
I feel really proud of myself when I am sitting at the dinner table watching my family eat a healthy dinner of salad or fish and broccoli (as opposed to, say, chicken nuggets, which we will probably have a million times this month also). It’s just so satisfying on this weird level.
Kids like to cook.
Kids are more likely to happily eat what they helped cook.
